What have I done?!

Everything was done with Photostop. Filters, changing around layer styles, some penwork...

And it all started with a Google Earth picture of Viva Las Vegas!

For the past 3 years, I've been stuck with talking to people who seem to think that 'LOL' is an EXCELLENT reply to anything.
Example:

I personally feel that the letters LOL is stupid, low-brow, and truly shows society that the internet community is a bunch of corner-cutting teenish-twentish users who can barely explain in words how they feel about anything.

Nothing kills a conversation faster than when a person types LOL without any other content!

And the term lost all meaning! People are using LOL for EVERYTHING now! How can EVERYTHING be 'laugh out loud' funny? Let LOL die out like L33T speak, 'the bomb', and William Hung!

So join me! Stop people from using LOL! Ridicule them! Make fun of their typing! Spray paint their dog! Whatever it takes for them to realize how stupid it is!

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT : Welcome to America!

"Welcome to America...", the fat balding white man mutters under his breath.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?" I roared. It was loud enough for him to hear, but not enough to cause too much attention.

Setting? Barnes and Nobles Cafe - a ritzy little place where people sit and scurry through un purchased books, with hands tainted with tea and cookies. This guy starts the show by putting a cup filled with trash on a seat near mines. "Okay, that's fine." I think to myself. I turn around and give him a quick glance, before returning to writing my award-winning script for this new Half-life 2 mod that I'm dreaming of. He's putting trash near me. It's not physically touching me or anything. It's kind of close to my comfort sphere, but only near the edges.

But he decides to up the ante. Apparently, to this fat man, I'm not a person. I'm not tiny Asian man! I'm not even tiny Asian monkey boy! I'm this PIECE of shit that sings for him, and dances for him, and turns around and bends over for him. "Please let me eat your shit, beautiful fat man! Please! I beg of you! I and my inferior skin color NEED your glorious attention to lick your balls!"

The fat man puts more trash, only this time, on the seat next to mines.

I snapped.

I ran with every scenario I could muster with my action-packed brain. Every one of them ended with my glass juice bottle broken in pieces, with half of the bottle jammed into fat man's heart.

Fuck! Why did I have to idolize beefy idiotic heroes that solve every problem with a dangerous smirk and a bloody gunfight? Why couldn't I adore heroes who solve problems with a sly remark, a underhanded comment, and end it with witty grace? Why must I think about going all Bond on him, thinking of various nefarious ways to see to it that I would be the last person he sees?

Finally, I thought of a solution. I would put MY trash... on his TABLE!

BRILLIANT!

But by the time I gather the nerve for something so brilliant (and deflated the giant 'asskicking' I wanted to give him), he got up.

But no, I won't let him retreat. "Hey, you mind throwing your trash away?" I say, thumbing towards the mess he left AROUND me.

Now, this next scene was one that made me speechless. Now to help you readers understand, fat balding white guy was not some trailer-park hick born from union of his mother and brother. The last bits of conversation between he and his friends were that of church, and Christianity, and emulating stuff about Jesus. Surely, this man had values.

"My FRIEND left that trash here. I'm not rude!" (He emphasizes 'I'm', as if implying that I'm some ignorant dick for telling fat man off, instead of licking his balls the way he wants me to.)

"I'll leave it over there, but I'm not going throw it away!"

For a short moment, I am left speechless. Do I throw chairs at him? Do I run over and kick him in the back? Do I throw his trash back at him? More importantly, what do I say? Why can't I think of a witty line?

"Welcome to America...", the fat balding white man mutters under his breath.

FUCK! I lost my chance! If only my tongue was as sharp as the knife that my mental self was already stabbing you with!

He left, and I sat there all pouty and disappointed. Disappointed at myself, not being able to defend myself.

In a world where I can rewind time, I would have said, "I AM American, fat-ass! Now get your fat-ass over here and pick your trash up, before I stick my American foot up your ass!"

And then we would resort to a dramatic Jet Li bar-fight in the confines of this Barnes and Noble's Cafe.

But alas, my mind is always 5-minutes too slow.

You win this round, Fat man. But I swear to god, if I find you on the street, give me 5 MINUTES to think of something clever to say! If I can't, I'll just kick you in the shins and roll you over into traffic!

Something really cool is going to Gary and Gayle's house.

This was done in a combination of Manga Studio Debut (For the sketch, ink), a demo version of Corel Painter (for the paint/color), and Adobe Illustrator (For the sexy sexy swirls).

This took me longer than I wanted it to be. 12 hours? Most of the time was spent experimenting with the power of Corel Painter and trying to replicate those sexy swirls and swivels that are on Alternative rock T-shirts. In the end, i feel that Illustrator has to be the most powerful tool in my arsenal for digital making. Painter is interesting. I'll keep playing with that.

What bothers me greatly is why Macromedia flash (It's still Macromedia, the version I was using) has such sucky export features. I couldn't import it into Photoshop since I was at school, and didn't bother to save the swf file. And now, every time I look at this pic, all I can do is moan at the lack of sharpness and image quality.

There's nothing more frustrating than drawing a story, skipping one page in the middle because you can't think of the proper dialog in it, finishing 90% of it, and going back to that one page and realizing that its dialog has yet to come to fruitation.

This particular arc has been around for about 3 months(which apparently is how I work). I'd like some closure.

The Virginia Tech probably hit me harder than it's supposed to. I was already devastated hearing about a school shooting in a college campus, especially one strongly devoted in technology. Even more devastating was that the gunman was a South Korean. Instead of trying to write point-of-views, I'm going to reveal the dozens of questions that have been brewing in the back of my skull.

And I ask these minority-focused questions because, frankly, nobody's really going to CARE about them. Most of the attention will be focused on the survivors, or the gunman. Yet, there's not enough questions being asked about how this crisis will change our country in the long run.

How will white America react, now that it's a 'model minority' killing people?
Will they blame video game violence? Marilyn music?
If another student had a gun as well, could Cho Seung-hui have been stopped and reduce the death toll?
Will South Korea by white America as a country be seen differently?
How will the black community react? Will they care?
Will the Asian community be backlash as silent yet dangerous-minded maniacs?
Will the Asian immigrant community suffer backlash in general? How will they defend themselves?
Will there suddenly be background checks and restrictions to college acceptances of minorities from other countries?
Does it take a shooting every decade for people to suddenly be involved in the mental health of people in school?
Why does school shootings take more precedent than say, a office massacre?

Don't diss this piece as some sort of social or cultural stance. Frankly, I like (and for lack of a better term, dislike) blacks, mexicans, jews, africans, europeans, anglo-saxons and asians equally.

But honest in all, what I don't like is people asking me, "Are you filipino? Are you japanese? Are you hawaiian?" Stop playing the guessing game, cause it doesn't matter. You will NOT learn more about me by knowing what race I am. So frankly, my race doesn't even matter in figuring out what kind of person I am.

And worst is when people who look like me, with my skin color or eyes just like mines, degrades me because I don't 'act' like them, and I don't 'talk' like them -- As if I act with this air of superiority because I didn't become a poster boy for the AZN club or converse in english while everyone else is speaking in their mother tongue.

Proud to be asian? Christ. Sometimes, I'm not even proud to be human.

And crazy causian lady on the street -- "No I don't eat ginger, and I don't drink tea, just because that's what my kind does."

Also, person who keeps annonymously replying, it's getting quite annoying and spammy. So knock it off. I don't want to spend 10 minutes fumbling with LJ's controls, just because it gets you off to post idiotic replies to my entries.

This has been in the backburner since August 2006! I decided to spend my spring break actually drawing it and inking it out.

I wanted to color it, but it's been 36 hours that I've been working on it, and well, I think it's time to say that it's finished. So, back to back posts of this 12 page (sigh) comic!

I'm really proud that it's finished. It even has a heart-warming ending.

I feel proud of my developing talent. I'm also proud that about 75% of it was inked with India Ink, and not with a micron pen. (Which are superior, in my opinion) It's just, micron pens are kinda expensive. (I found some for $1.50, but the average is $2.75) India Ink costs about 2 dollars a bottle, and there is a LOT of black ink in there. The expensive part are the pen nubs, which range about 2 dollars each. I'm sure I can use them for a long time.

While Micron pens, they die after about 15-20 pictures. Pros is that I can ink at school, so I'm not exactly saying goodbye to them.

It probably took me about 3 hours to write the whole script. I drew thumbnails for them, which took a REAL lot of time. (From August to February) I went into blue pencil, because drawing it on the Tablet was a ass-pain. Hoping to cut time, I only penciled in some of the more difficult shapes, and inked directly on blue pencil. I decided NOT to ink the lettering and border boxes, since paint programs do the most accurate lines.

It probably took me about 15 hours for Blue pencil, and 5-7 hours for inking. Then, it took me 1 hour to scan. Afterwards, it took me about 3 hours to clean up any scanning smudges, adjust their size to a managable 800 x 1075, whiten up the gray-ness, and draw vector shapes for the border boxes. Finally, it took me about 3 MORE hours to copy/paste the text, and blacken the outside to give it more of a solid look.

I'll never be a mangaka at my speed. :(
